The event will feature the world of beers over 7% alcohol by volume (ABV). Each one of these strong sipping beers have their own personality complexity, color, aroma, and taste.

The brewing industry refers to beers that are brewed with a strong alcohol content as “High Gravity Beers”. They often encompass ‘extreme’ beers, ‘imperial’ styles, or ‘big’ beers. Generally any beer over 7% alcohol by volume (ABV) is considered a high gravity beer.

High gravity beers are not crafted with the sole intent of a higher alcohol content. The higher percentage of alcohol is due to the use of more fermentable sugars and other ingredients that are used by brewers trying to create complex, flavorful and unique beers.

Gravity is simply a measurement of the density of the beer compared to water. Brewers use an instrument called a hydrometer to determine the density of the beer before, during, and after fermentation. This instrument floats in a fresh sample of beer and has a measurement scale on it’s sides. here the surface of the beer meets the floating scale is how the measurement of ‘specific gravity’ is recorded. In other words, the scale will read 1.000 for water, but perhaps 1.105 for a certain high gravity beer.

The measurement before fermentation is called the original gravity and the measurement after fermentation is called the final gravity. These two numbers plus some simple math is how the brewer calculates the overall alcohol content.

Every beer at the Bold Beer Bash will have it’s own personality. A few will be light in color with a fruity taste, some will be dark and robust, but every one will be complex and without a doubt; they will be strong!  These are sipping beers. Remember ! RESPECT THE BEER – These “Big Beers” are about quality, not quantity.

The Bluffton Beer Bash High Gravity Beer Sampling is the first of three beer tasting events that Bear Foot Sports is hosting in 2012. The Hilton Head Taste of Summer Craft Beer Festival is May 19th at Shelter Cove Harbour and The 2nd Annual Bluffton International & Craft Beer Festival, returns Nov. 3rd to the Calhoun Street Promenade. More details on those events will be coming soon.
